Re: Portable chainsaw mill, red oak., 10:04 PM. Any oak I've sawed smells Pete but the odour does go away. If your not going to saw it right away, (while your building the mill) its a good idea to paint the ends of the logs to slow the drying and prevent checking, Oak is slow to air dry, expect 2 or 3 years for 5/4 lumber.
